EVO Implantable Contact lens (ICL)

Visian Implantable Collamer Lens

It is once again Sunday afternoon as I write this post about another exciting technology in vision correction. EVO Visian ICL is an Implantable Collamer Lens used to correct near-sightedness. While our practice has been performing the ICL procedure for many years, I am thrilled that this newest version – EVO – is now available for our patients in our San Jose location.

What is EVO Visian ICL? EVO ICL is a refractive surgery that can correct myopia (near-sightedness) with or without astigmatism. It is made of Collamer, a biocompatible material that is flexible and works in harmony with your eye. EVO ICL is an additive technology without the removal of any corneal tissue, and unlike most permanent refractive solutions, it can be removed.

What is the difference between EVO Visian ICL and other procedures such as LASIK? EVO ICL is an intraocular procedure that is an additive; no significant change to the eye itself. On the other hand, LASIK, SMILE, or PRK are corneal procedures that reshape the cornea. Visual outcome and recovery between the types of procedures are very similar. The key difference is that EVO ICL does not alter the cornea, which allows certain individuals with thin corneas to receive vision correction.

What is it like to get EVO Visian ICL done? We perform EVO ICL in-office. The procedure is comfortable throughout the entire process and typically painless. The only sensation would be the numbing eye drops, a bright light and occasional pressure. The procedure typically takes 20-30 minutes. Vision can be noticeably clearer immediately and there would be no sensation of the implant being there.

Who is a good candidate for EVO Visian ICL? EVO ICL is an excellent procedure for anyone between the ages of 21 and 45 seeking treatment for near-sightedness, with or without astigmatism. It is a game changer for those who were denied vision correction due to their high prescriptions or thin corneas. The procedure is safe for those with active lifestyles, and stable in their current prescription for at least one year.

I hope this has been informative. I enjoy giving patients the ability to see without glasses and contacts.  The best way to learn more is to come visit us, and see if you are a candidate for EVO Visian ICL. I look forward to seeing you soon.
