Custom Lens Replacement (CLR) is a modern vision correction procedure we perform here in our state-of-the-art facility.

The goal of the CLR procedure is to restore clear vision without being dependent on glasses for distance or near activities. CLR replaces the aging and increasingly dysfunctional lens with a clear lens implant that restores clear vision and has additional capabilities.

Where our LASIK procedures correct vision by addressing the cornea (the front surface of the eye), they cannot address problems that result from the aging of our lens (located behind the cornea). The aging process of our lens is natural and normal and typically is not noticeable until our 40s, when reading glasses may be required.

The lens continues to lose function over time as it becomes more rigid and brittle and yellows over time. More powerful reading glasses are needed. Less noticeable are changes in the contrast and clarity of objects. This process is known as dysfunctional lens syndrome and the end result is typically the formation of cataracts, which requires traditional cataract surgery to correct.

By replacing the aging lens, CLR can correct for the refractive errors that prevent good vision at all distances. The focus power of the lens implant is selected to correct for refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia.
CLR is a permanent lens solution that prevents cataracts from developing in the future. CLR is also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (or RLE).

Performed early enough in the aging process, the CLR procedure can greatly improve vision quality, while also fixing the clouding of the lens.
