Standard LASIK & Epi-LASIK (PRK)

The FDA approved Laser Vision Correction in 1995.  Standard LASIK and Standard Epi-LASIK have a track record for effectively treating basic vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  Standard LASIK and Epi-LASIK were considered the gold standard vision correction procedures until 2002 when Wavefront Technology was introduced.  Standard LASIK treatments do not utilize the modern advancements of Wavefront Technology, which address night vision problems.  However, Standard LASIK may be an excellent option for certain patients that have basic vision problems, good pre-existing night vision, normal pupil size and minimal pre-existing high order aberrations. At the Laser Eye Center, we may recommend Standard LASIK/Epi-LASIK if we believe that the results will be excellent and that the additional cost of wavefront technology is not necessary.

• Safety record and long-term results are excellent with Standard LASIK and Epi-LASIK (PRK)
  
• The pre-programmed laser treatment is determined by a patient’s prescription with the refraction test, similar to a glasses prescription.  Unlike Wavefront Technology, it does not address night vision aberrations
  
• Main side effect includes the possibility of inducing night-vision side effects, such as seeing halos, glare, and starbursts at night.  Studies show that the incidence of this problem ranges from 3%-30% (much more likely when treating larger amounts of nearsightedness).  While these side effects are usually mild and diminish over time, they are a potential source of dissatisfaction with night vision
