Overview of LASIK

LASIK is the most commonly performed laser vision correction procedure.

  1. In the first step of LASIK, an automated instrument is used to prepare the cornea. For this step, either a mechanical microkeratome device or an Intralase™ femtosecond laser (All-Laser LASIK) is used.
  2. Secondly, an excimer laser reshapes the underlying cornea to the desired optical correction using either WavefrontLaser Technology or Standard Laser technology.

The LASIK procedure takes about 15 minutes for both eyes and is generally considered painless. The following day, patients can quickly return to normal activities, such as driving, reading, and exercising, thought it may take weeks for vision to improve to optimal levels. Four variations of the LASIK procedure have evolved over the years.

  • All-Laser Wavefront IntraLASIK is the most technologically advanced vision correction procedure available for the safest LASIK possible and best vision results possible. This method combines the added safety of All Laser LASIK with the additive benefits of wavefront technology. It is the only method officially approved for the US Navy, Air Force and NASA.

  • Wavefront LASIK (microkeratome) Customized Wavefront LASIK for sharper night vision, better visual contrast and higher chance of “better than 20/20” vision. Wavefront Technology is especially recommended for patients with large corrections, larger pupils, poor night vision or high expectations. The automated Amadeus Microkeratome System is very safe for patients with normal corneal measurements.

  • All-Laser IntraLASIK: For added safety, All-Laser LASIK eliminates ALL blade-related flap problems. We especially recommend IntraLASIK for patients with thin, flat, steep corneas or dry eyes. This method is very effective for patients with basic vision problems, but does not utilize wavefront technology.
  • Standard LASIK (microkeratome) has a long track record for being safe and can effectively treat mild/moderate nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Standard LASIK does not utilize the advancements of customized Wavefront technology or All-Laser IntraLASIK.
