In order to keep pace with the rising popularity
of refractive procedures, Dr.
Gary M. Kawesch decided to expand his
practice in the year 2000. Dr.
Craig S. Bindi joined the practice Eight
years ago as a full-time refractive surgeon
and has performed over 20,000 refractive
procedures. More recently in July 2005,
Dr. Samir
B. Shah was added for his expertise
in cataract and refractive lens exchange
surgery. Dr. Bindi and Dr. Shah were both
hand selected by Dr. Kawesch for their expert
knowledge of refractive surgery and specialized
training in the field of ophthalmology.

Dr. Craig Bindi is a refractive surgeon
specializing in advanced techniques of laser
vision correction. Dr. Bindi was born and
raised in San Jose and has been practicing
in Northern California since 1997. Since
joining the Laser Eye Center of Silicon
Valley in 2000, he has gained a reputation
as one of the leading refractive surgeons
in the Bay Area and has distinguished himself
from other Bay Area refractive surgeons
by the high level of one-to-one patient
care that has become his trademark.

Dr. Bindi specialized in
Ophthalmology at the University of California
Davis School of Medicine. He spent an additional
year studying and researching refractive
surgery and corneal physiology during a
post-doctoral fellowship at the University
of Arizona. Prior to focusing on refractive
surgery, he performed surgery to treat cataracts,
glaucoma, retinal detachment and eye trauma.
Dr. Bindi has performed
laser vision correction on professional
football and baseball players, Olympic athletes
as well as fellow eye doctors and family
members. Dr. Bindi is a board-certified
ophthalmologist, a fellow of the American
Academy of Ophthalmology and a member of
the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery. He has served as an Investigator
for collaborative multi-center university
clinical research projects and has written
articles that have been published in peer-reviewed
journals such as Cornea
and Ophthalmology.
Staying committed to leading edge technology,
he was among the first group of refractive
surgeons in the country to implant the Verisyse
and Visian phakic intraocular lenses for
extreme nearsightedness.

Dr. Samir Shah is a corneal and refractive surgeon
specializing in the newest techniques in laser
vision correction, refractive lens surgery, cataract
and intraocular surgery, corneal transplantation,
and anterior segment reconstruction.
Dr. Shah is a California native, having graduated
valedictorian from Lynbrook High School in San
Jose. He then went on to complete his undergraduate
studies from the University of California, Berkeley,
where he was recipient of the California Alumni
Scholarship. Dr. Shah received his medical degree
from The George Washington University in Washington
DC. He performed his medical internship at St.
Marys Medical Center in San Francisco, prior
to specializing in ophthalmology at the University
of California, Irvine. While at the University
of California he distinguished himself by receiving
a research grant from the LASIK Institute, giving
presentations at national eye meetings, and publishing
peer-reviewed research articles in respected ophthalmic
publications. After residency, Dr. Shah furthered
his expertise in corneal and refractive surgery
as a clinical instructor and fellow at the Doheny
Eye Institute at the University of Southern California,
an internationally recognized eye surgical training
program.
Prior to his return to the bay area, Dr. Shah
was in private practice in Orange County and also
served as an Assistant Clinical Professor at the
University of California Irvine. In his role as
a teacher, Dr. Shah taught ophthalmology residents
important clinical and surgical techniques. Dr.
Shah is committed to visual rehabilitation for
the less fortunate and has volunteered his time
to perform surgery at free surgical eye camps
in India. He also is a staff surgeon at the Contra
Costa Regional Medical Center where he cares for
many underinsured county patients.
Dr. Shah is a board certified ophthalmologist.
He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology,
a fellow of the American College of Surgeons,
and a member of the American Society of Cataract
and Refractive. He provides manuscript review
for the journal Ophthalmology, and over the years
has been involved with collaborative research
pertaining to LASIK, radial kerototomy, microkeratome
technology, and novel surgical techniques for
corneal transplantation.
