Patients and individuals are well aware of the common pre-exam circumstances that are amongst the more common of procedures.  For example, a patient going to get blood drawn and blood work is well aware of the fasting and hydration that is needed.  This example applies to the marjority of individuals.  For those that are specifically going to have their eyes done through LASIK surgery, the pre exam considerations are certainly different.  Wavefront LASIK is a customized and more advanced procedure that is more precise over traditional LASIK surgeries and actually produces higher and more effective vision results.  In fact, a recent study by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it is evidenced that approximately 98 percent of patients saw 20/20 or better vision immediately following their Wavefront LASIK eye surgery.

 

However, there are proper and effective pre exam considerations that take place and specifics that individuals need to pay close attention to.  Since the individual is going to have a clear covering of the front of their eye, using an excimer laser, there are the required pre surgery exams that can help identify certain risks, opportunities, and other factors that are specific to the individual and no two cases are exactly the same.

 

There are subsequently such pre exam tests including a comprehensive vision analysis, binocular vision assessment, corneal topography, and more.  Since Wavefront surgery is a relatively new technology and development in eye care, doctors have been extra sensitive and careful when assessing their patients for this type of LASIK surgery and take extra precautions.  The same was done years ago when traditional LASIK hit the market.  This extra amount of sensitivity can prove to be extremely beneficial for the patient as the doctor must consider all of the influences for the individual before conducting this type of surgery.

 

The Wavefront analysis is performed with an aberrometer.  The doctor will place the individual to look through a device where they are asked to rest their chin.  What will happen is that for a few moments, a point of light will be projected on to the individual’s eye and after a short moment, a Wavefront measurement is completes and a map including the eye prints are produced.

 

The doctor uses this eye map to determine the amount of light that is allowed in to the retina, in addition to ensuring that the circular plane exactly matches the diameter of the individual’s eye’s pupil.  This map then indicates what is wrong with the eye and where the LASIK needs to be concentrated.
