Refractive Lens Exchange

A refractive lens exchange is a procedure that is essentially the same as cataract surgery, but is done to increase visual acuity and reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contact lenses. It is not necessary to have cataracts in order to a refractive lens exchange done.

When most people think of refractive surgery they think of LASIK, but some people are not the best candidates for LASIK because of pre-existing conditions or abnormal anatomy of the eye. In those cases, a refractive lens exchange may offer an alternative. In this procedure, the eye's natural lens is removed. An intraocular lens (IOL) made of silicone or plastic is used to replace the natural lens. The IOL has the necessary power to correct the patient's myopia or hyperopia much like a contact lens does.
