LASIK Procedures

When you decide to have LASIK surgery, you have the option of either having one eye done at a time or having both eyes done in one procedure. Several factors go into making this decision, and there is no right or wrong choice. Different LASIK surgeons may have a preference one way or the other, so discuss this with your surgeon first.

The benefit to doing each eye separately is that you will able to see how your eye responds to the surgery. If you heal in a way that is unpredictable, then the surgeon can make adjustments to the procedure on your second eye to compensate. Also, if a post-operative infection were to occur (which is unlikely), it would only affect one eye. The benefit to having LASIK procedures on both eyes at the same time is that you only have to have one operation and take one set of medications. The fewer medications you take the better, as they can have their own set of side effects.

Making Decisions About LASIK Procedures
The best way to make decisions about LASIK procedures is to have a frank and open conversation with your doctor. The doctors at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley are happy to discuss the pros and cons of various options with you and offer their opinions.

Studies have shown that LASIK procedures in which only one eye was done are no more accurate than LASIK procedures in which both eyes were done. The decision is only a matter of what feels right to you.
