The term monovision applies to the practice of using LASIK eye surgery to correct vision in each eye differently. One eye is corrected to see objects at a distance clearly, and the other eye is corrected to see objects nearby clearly. It may seem like an awkward solution, but after a period of about six to eight weeks the brain adjusts for the discrepancy, and the effect is clear vision at all distances. While LASIK monovision is possible at any age, it is only really applicable for people who are presbyopic, those requiring reading glasses after the age of 40. Presbyopia is the medical term for the condition that causes your eyes to have difficulty shifting focus, also known as "accommodation," between near and far distances. Presbyopia can affect everyone with age, even those who have previously undergone LASIK surgery. LASIK Monovision Questions How do you know if LASIK monovision is for you? It is really a matter of personal choice. Your doctor at Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley can discuss all the pros and cons with you, but ultimately you have to decide. Normally doctors will recommend against monovision for patients under 35 because they are not yet presbyopic. However, if you are over 40, you should give it some consideration. Some people find that monovision is unnecessary because they do not mind having to wear reading glasses occasionally. Others like the idea of not needing glasses at all. If you do choose to get monovision, however, fear not. You can always have an enhancement down the road if you find it difficult to adjust to.
