Though LASIK eye surgery is a relatively quick and simple procedure that usually produces predictable results, it is important to remember that it is still a surgery and thus carries certain risks. A good laser eye center, like the Laser Eye Center of Silicon Valley, will make sure all patients are well informed of the potential risks and benefits of LASIK prior to surgery. Most complications of LASIK eye surgery are mild and temporary, but occasionally some are serious. When LASIK is performed by an experienced surgeon, serious complications are extremely rare. One common type of mild complication is over-correction or under-correction. Sometimes correction problems go away without treatment over time; sometimes an "enhancement" procedure is required. Most Common LASIK Eye Surgery Risks The most common risks of LASIK eye surgery are dry eyes and nighttime side effects. If you are prone to dry eyes before the LASIK, you are more likely to have a problem after surgery. This complication is easily treated with eye drops, and if necessary a small procedure to slow the draining of natural tears can provide significant relief. Nighttime side effects include glare, halos, starbursts and ghosting of images. Most nighttime side effects are temporary and resolve within a month after eye surgery. Typically, these problems are minor and not debilitating. If the problem persists, patients may need to wear glasses with a weak prescription at night. In general, though, when LASIK is performed by a competent surgeon, the risks associated with it are minor.
